A person needs to research the different accredited colleges that offer an anesthesia technician program. These programs are generally a two year program. The costs for the programs vary based on the school. A student can get financial aid by applying for grants. In order to apply for federal funding grants, a student must complete a federal application for student aid. This is also known as a FAFSA form. Upon completion of the federal application for student aid, the student will become eligible for grants, scholarships and work study programs. All of the aid helps to lower the cost of tuition.

A student will have to take the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT) certification exam. This exam can be taken only after all the requirements have been completed. In order to be eligible to sit for the ASATT exam, a student must have either graduated from an accredited two year anesthesia technician program or worked for two years as an anesthesia technician. A student has to have computer skills and be fluent in English as well as have a high school diploma to be eligible to take the test. The American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians certification exam is held at over 100 different locations across the United States each year. There are also International locations available for oversea students. The exam is a computer based one. The fees for the exam are different for technologists and technicians. The technologist exam fee is 300 dollars. The technician exam fee is 250 dollars.

An anesthesia technician must maintain their certification with the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians in order to continue working. A technician has to complete 20 additional hours of continuing education credits. There is a $60 required fee to complete these credits. A technologist must complete 30 continuing education hours. There is a $75 fee for this. These fees are annual and must be completed in order to maintain certification. Some places of employment require additional certifications to be completed as well.
