Qualified ultrasound technicians are in demand by a wide variety of employers. Students who have completed the necessary education may find jobs in doctor’s offices, clinics, hospitals or imaging centers. Salaries are attractive and job outlook is positive on the whole even for new candidates in this important medical field.

In order to receive the necessary qualifications most students complete either a two year or four year education that provides them with either an associate degree or a bachelor’s degree. One year programs are also available on a limited basis, however, these programs are not generally recommended unless the student already has considerable experience in the health care field and is hoping to broaden the scope of their employability.

Clearly a four year education will be more expensive than a two year associate degree. Tuition for a two year degree is likely to be at least $20,000, while students who obtain a four year degree can expect to spend twice that amount. The two year degree is the more economical option and may be a suitable choice for those students not wishing to be required to complete the general education classes that do not directly relate to their specialization.

Students who are preparing to become ultrasound technicians can expect other expenses in connection with their education. They must typically pay a registration fee that will probably be less than $100. This may be an annual expense or it may only be due the first year of the program. The student is also typically responsible for buying books and related materials to complete their coursework. These expenses can add up to approximately $1,000. Some programs will require that the student purchase a uniform. This is generally inexpensive at around $30 to $50.

Financial aid options for ultrasound technician students are plentiful. Most community colleges and universities that offer suitable educational programs can also help students to obtain the financial aid they need. This may include scholarships or loans. The most common avenue for student loans is through the federal government. These low fee and low interest rate loans are paid back after the student graduates from the program.

Employment outlook for ultrasound technicians is undeniably positive. Experienced professionals with the right education can expect steady employment for years to come. Although the education can be expensive, it is definitely a worthwhile field to enter with opportunities for attractive compensation and benefits.
