Working as a surgical technician can be a rewarding, interesting career but training as a doctor is not required to carry out work in an operating room. The job prospects for the anesthesia technician are increasing and anyone that is interested can prosper as a medical professional and benefit from a fulfilling career.

Successful anesthesia technician employment comes with various duties. Technicians are able to function under the direction of qualified anesthesiologists and other operating room workers like surgeons and nurses. A patient who has undergone anesthesia will need a technician who is able to monitor vital life signs like breathing, blood pressure, and temperature. Any errors that are available have to be reported to the anesthesiologist right away. Typically known as anesthesia technicians, these professionals are not doctors but they serve important roles for the patient’s wellness during a surgery.

Other job duties that an anesthesia technician could have during a surgery include inspecting surgical tools used by the anesthesiologist and reporting any non-working equipment. Anesthesia technicians are responsible for calibrating the equipment properly and sterilizing equipment before surgery. Technicians will have to restock anesthesia inventory and reorder supplies when needed.

Anesthesia technician employment opportunities will continue to increase in the decades to come. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that job prospects for surgical technicians will increase on a faster-than-usual average. The BLS states that this increase is due to the increasing elderly population that may need more surgery. This increase is expected to be as high as 25% from 2008 to 2018. The regular earnings for anesthesia technicians may vary from one city and employer to another. Graduates who have acquired certifications could start off with a salary as much as $16 an hour in the beginning year or nearly $30,000 every year if working full time. After a few years, a practicing anesthesia technician could make nearly $42,000 every year or nearly $21 an hour.

Surgical technicians are being employed in different medical establishments. More than half of all technicians were employed by hospitals, generally in operating rooms. Other technicians worked in doctors’ or dentists’ offices and outpatient care centers. Some technicians are hired directly by surgeons who have specially created surgical teams.

The work of an anesthesia technician requires many hours of helping people who undergo important surgeries. People who are not sure whether or not they want to obtain this kind of education should complete an online course to see if they can keep up with the responsibilities. Due to the expansion of the medical industry, anesthesia technicians will remain in demand and have plenty of work to do.
