So what does a person in this field do? An Anesthesia Tech (often referred to as an ‘AT’) assists Doctors and Anesthesiologists within surgery rooms, cares for and maintains anesthesia equipment. You may also test and trouble shoot such equipment as well as maintain medical inventory and supplies, maintain patient airways and even maintain patient airways while they are under anesthesia.

What is the future outlook for this position? Job opportunities for Anesthesia Techs are expected to grow much faster than average within the next ten years. As the aging population continues to require more surgeries, the demand for these Techs will stay in constant demand. As of 2011, the annual salary range was calculated to be between $22,600 and $46,900.

What do you need to get started? Most employers look to see that you have completed a course with one of the anesthesia technician schools or programs. Many technical schools and community colleges offer Associate Degrees in anesthesia technology. Classes will include Medical Terminology, EKG Analysis, Basic Life Support, Anesthetic Pharmacology and possibly some Clinical Experience – which is always a great thing to have. Of course, once you are all done you will need to get certified.

What certificates will you need? The first certificate you will want to look into is often referred to as “Cer.A.T.” which is simply short for ‘Certified Anesthesia Technician’. You can find the testing for this certification offered by the ASATT (American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians). This certificate will not only give you an easier time obtaining your desired position, but it could help you earn more pay as well.
Where can you take this career? There are two steps you can take to further your career as an Anesthesia Tech. The first is to obtain your CER.A.T.T, which is a certificate, a step higher than your first. This will allow you more pay and be able to perform more procedures within the surgery room. You could also continue your training and continue school to become a full Anesthesiologist.
