Automotive Technician

An automotive technician school trains students to maintain, build, and design the vehicles of both today and the future. Students taking the courses will learn the principles of engines and engine maintenance, about car emissions, how to analyze the stresses the vehicle endures on a day to day basis, fluid mechanics, electrical transmissions, brake systems and more. Upon graduating from the school and completing all automotive tech courses, the student can look forward to continuing their training to become an auto designer, auto mechanic, car tester, automotive engineer or an industry analyst.

Auto designers are those who work to improve the ergonomics and appearance of automobiles. Those determined to enter into this field will have years of design school ahead of them and very seldom are they assured a promising career.

Auto mechanics are generally in high demand at car dealerships, tire stores, brake and muffler shops, as well as having the option of self-employment. There are many opportunities for advancement in this career, as well as specializations that can be gained by continuing education.

Car testers are typically hired by car dealers or car manufacturers, but can also be hired by car magazines and companies heavily involved with the automobile industry. Exceptional driving techniques are a plus as you will be required to push automobiles to their limits. This is generally presented as a rather glamorous career opportunity, but those involved are extremely well educated and take their work very seriously.

To become an automotive engineer, a student will have to have many courses and hours of hands-on training. Many automotive engineers have graduate degrees and all must pass certification examinations as well as continuing their education to keep their certifications current.

Analysts of the automotive industry will find themselves conducting research in the industry. They will assess trends, prepare forecasts; develop industry models and size markets in addition to other tasks. Most analysts have well developed oral and written communication skills. Many automotive industry analysts are required to have at least a bachelor’s degree and sometimes a master’s degree in business administration. From there, the student will apply for an entry-level job in the industry to gain experience. It can take from two to five years before one is considered to have enough experience to apply for a position as an industry analyst.

Auto Technician Career

The job of an automotive technician has evolved along with the automobiles they repair, inspect and maintain. With increasing technology, vehicles are relying more on computers, which means that technicians have to be just as adept with computerized shop equipment as they are with hand tools. Technicians carry out basic care such as tire rotation, diagnose intricate complications and oil changes.

After completing a vocational school program, auto technicians usually start off as trainee technicians, lubrication workers or helpers while gaining experience and learning from well-versed technicians and mechanics. Once they’ve gained enough practice and experience, new technicians may perform routine tasks on their own. Depending on the level of education, auto technicians may be able to become fully qualified technicians within either a few months for those with postgraduate training or two to five years for individuals with a graduate education.
