A certified nurse technician works under the direction and supervision of a doctor or a registered nurse (RN) performing various duties, depending on the setting where he/she works. Those who work in hospitals may give patients baths, help them eat, dispense medication, monitor machines and check vital signs. You can find nurse technicians in rehabilitation clinics, assisted living facilities, nursing homes and doctor’s offices. Nurse technicians may also sterilize equipment, draw blood, assist in collecting specimens, escort patients to the examination room and help with exams. It is up to each state to determine what nurse technicians can and can’t do.

What kind of person would make a good nurse technician? Basically anyone who would make a good nurse. In fact many nursing technicians are in a nursing program already or are planning on eventually becoming licensed practical nurses or registered nurses. Becoming a nurse technician is a good way to break into the nursing field and get a lot of good experience. A nurse technician needs to be compassionate yet stable emotionally, must have excellent physical stamina to keep up with the tough rigors of the job, and possess good communication skills.

If you have decided you would like to be a nurse technician, the next step is to complete a nursing technician’s program at a community college or one of many certified nurse schools. Certified nurse courses include subjects such as anatomy, medical terms, psychology, physiology, nutrition and infection control. Most states require you to pass the state board of nursing exam before you can obtain employment in the field. If you want to work in a nursing facility you will also have to be certified by the government which requires a test of competency and at least 75 hours of training.

The nurse technician field is expected to grow by 28% through the year 2016, so the job outlook is favorable. Many nurse technicians desire to advance in the medical field, which constantly creates openings for new technicians. The average salary for a nurse technician is around $27,000 per year. Becoming a nurse technician is not for the fainthearted. Good study skills should begin in high school and continue on into training. Anyone in the field must be constantly learning. With hard work and dedication you will be on your way to a successful career!

Nursing Technician School Costs

As with any college education, nursing school can be expensive. Depending on the school, a student of a nursing program can find themselves paying over $5,000 per year. Community colleges are the least expensive. Private universities are the most expensive.
