Dental technicians help dentists by filing prescriptions for dentures, bridges, crowns, veneers and other prosthetics. The dentist sends the technician the details of the prosthetic that has to be made and an impression of the patient’s mouth or teeth. Then, the dental technician makes a plaster model of the patient’s mouth. They study the model, then slowly and painstakingly create the prosthetic. In some dental labs, the dental technician performs all the work of making the prosthetic, while in others they’re responsible for only a few of the stages. A dental technician can specialize in one of five areas. They can be a specialist in orthodontic appliances, partial or complete dentures, ceramics, or crowns and bridges.

As can be seen, the job of dental technician requires a great deal of skill, accuracy and no little amount of artistry. A fully trained dental technician studies for three to four years and may need even more years of training and study to become very highly skilled.

As health care costs rise, medical technicians are increasingly replacing doctors and nurses in every-day duties in many different areas of health care. As a result, the demand for medical technicians is rising, and there are an increasing number of medical technician programs appearing to meet the growing demand.

Medical technicians work in many areas of health care. They may have highly specialized medical skills such as emergency medicine or they may be administrative specialists. In some cases, medical technicians are trained on the job. Many positions, however, require formal training. Some formal training programs, such as phlebotomist training, may take only a few weeks. Other programs require one or two years of formal training. Typically, the salary an individual earns will depend on the amount of formal training.

Formal medical technician training is available in many different institutions. Some vocational high schools offer some medical technician training. More commonly, medical technician schools are private or public vocational colleges and community colleges. Programs are accredited by either the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools or the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. Many accredited programs also offer internship opportunities as part of their programs.

Courses vary depending on the specialty studied, but medical technician schools usually offer a set of core courses. These commonly include academic courses such as basic biology, anatomy, chemistry and physiology, as well as administrative courses such as keyboarding, record keeping and medical records transcription and management. Students also participate in laboratory courses where they learn about laboratory techniques and analytical tools, basic first aid, diagnostic procedures and clinical procedures. Students considering a career as a medical technician should consider taking biology, chemistry and mathematics courses in high school.

The employment outlook for medical technicians is strong. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics expects medical technician employment to increase by 34 percent by 2018. The number of available positions is expected to exceed the number of job seekers, which may push wages up.

Salary for medical technicians varies depending on the specific skills of the individual and the type of employment. In 2008, the “median” wage, which is the middle of the wage rage, was $28,300 annually, with salaries reaching to over $40,000. Those employed at general medical hospitals had the highest median wage, while those employed in outpatient care centers or non-physician practitioner’s offices earned the lowest median wage.

As the US population ages and health care costs increase, medical technicians will be increasing demand. Medical technician schools offer many different programs to help students around the country obtain the specialized skills to work in the health care industry.

Becoming an x ray technician is a decision that can lead to a very rewarding career in the health care industry. Employment opportunities are numerous in both the public and private sector. X ray technician schools are found in every state. The main requirement is a high school diploma or GED. The average program takes about 2 years to complete. An x ray technician must go through 24 months of studying to acquire the necessary techniques needed to enter the field.

An x ray technician program teaches students to become qualified for various x ray procedures. Most x ray technician schools include real world diagnostic training. Some schools allow students to assist with x ray procedures at nearby medical facilities. Enrollment is fairly simple. Each school has different requirements, but most provide all the training that is required to become a certified x ray technician. Students not only learn how to handle x ray equipment, but gain knowledge in human anatomy. High school biology courses can be useful for students planning to pursue a career as an x ray technician.

Previous medical training does help, but is not usually required. An x ray technician usually receives instruction in pharmacology, radiology, physics, medical imaging and physiology. The course of study typically includes radiology safety training due to the potential for radiation exposure for both the x ray technician and the patient. Receiving formal medical training specific to becoming an x ray technician opens a lot of doors in terms of employment. Many hospitals and medical facilities will not consider hiring someone unless they have some form of technical or medical training. When selecting a school, it is import to choose one that is fully accredited.

Associate, certificate and bachelor’s degrees may be earned from most x ray technician schools. The Associate’s degree is the most common degree held by an x ray technician. However, some schools offer specialized training for taking certain types of x rays such as those required during a routine mammogram or MRI. Some schools offer programs available online, but before enrolling in an online-only program, it is important to verify if the school is accredited since most hospitals and medical facilities will only accept certification from an accredited source.

Most X ray technician schools offer programs designed to prepare a student for the challenges of this rewarding field. As completion of the program draws near, most x ray schools offer employment assistance. An X ray technician is one of the most in-demand careers in the health care industry, according to U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics figures.
